Welcome to The Real Story
The Real Story is a celebration of creative nonfiction. Not that there’s anything wrong with fiction. Look, we like making stuff up as much as anyone else does, but we’re more excited about the creative possibilities of telling the truth. We love true stories (and even mostly true stories), personal essays, memoirs, diaries, sketches and literary journalism. After all, real life is so much stranger than fiction.
We’ll be taking part in more creative nonfiction adventures through 2012 and beyond. Follow us on twitter @rainycity to keep up with all our goings-on.
The Real Story is brought to you by Openstories, and supported by the Manchester Literature Festival. Special thanks to the International Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester for use of their facilities for our photo shoot.
The Real Story 2011 competition
We invited people to submit unpublished personal essays or brief memoirs of 2000 words or less. The topic could be anything, as long as it told us a compelling story. You can read the five winning essays by clicking on the links to the left under “Featured Stories”. We’re delighted to be publishing these vivid and engaging personal essays, which represent a really diverse range of subjects and styles. You can find out more about our five featured writers – Melanie Amri, Nija Dalal, David Day, Benjamin Judge and Shabnam Younus – by clicking on their names to read their writer profiles. You can listen to the stories below (many thanks to audio producer Nija Dalal):We’ll be taking part in more creative nonfiction adventures through 2012 and beyond.
